Chinatown Street Festival 2013 (13th Annual)
It will be held on August 10, 2013 in the heart of Calgary Chinatown!
The footprint of the Festival has been expanded to cater the ever growing participation. In 2010, Chinatown Street Festival (CSF) attracted over 70,000 patrons throughout the day in Chinatown. It has been a premiere summer multi-cultural festival, which has a combination of food & merchant booths and entertainment.
Major intervals: 10am Festival Activities commence; 11:30am Opening Ceremony at Main Stage.
The Festival will break down into 6 major zones – Cultural, Sportif, Merchants, Food, Performance, Hidden Gems.
CULTURAL (2nd Ave S.E. between Centre Street and Riverfront Avenue)
First introduced in 2010, this Avenue is full of Fusion Cultural Activities. There is a stage where Music Performances will be showcased, that includes sessions of karaoke entertainment, Chinese traditional music performance, and drama skits. It is dubbed as a retro Hong Kong Style Flea Market in the 70s. This is fuelled by new community partners in Bow River Flow, Wish Tree Youth Engagement Tent, the Alberta Yo-Yo Club, Calgary Samba, the Calgary Junior Chess Club, Global Fest, Children’s Art & Craft Tent, Harmony Gu-Zheng Ensemble, Chinese Calligraphy Demonstration, Chinatown Wall Mural Tour and much more.
SPORTIF (1st ST S.E. between Riverfront Avenue and 4th Avenue)
This zone has all the energy you could imagine! Festival-goers can try their luck at the Booth of Fortune to win prizes sponsored by TD Bank. Family and kids can visit the Jungle Bouncer supported and manned by Cardel Place staff. You can test out your golfing skills at the Longest Putt Challenge; or Power Shootout at the Calgary Hitmen / Roughnecks booth and for a chance to win some swags of the pro-teams. The zone also finds the 5th FeverSports 3on3 Street Soccer and the 2nd Chinatown Classic 3on3 Street Hockey. This is also a major promenade that you can gain access to all the other zones with ease.
MERCHANTS (2nd Avenue S.E. between Centre Street and 1st ST S.E.)
Thousands of products, goods and services can be found on this promenade. You can find Chinese Herb, Kids Merchandises, Books, Horticultural Products, Community Services etc. All the merchant tents are surrounded by a variety of permanent stores in Chinatown where you can get grocery, bubble tea, Hong Kong style cafe, Dim Sum and much more. University of Calgary Solar Car Team will once again return to this area, in addition to WinSport Bobsled Team and its high performance athletes to engage the public. Last but not least, Chinese Music Development Association will showcase their talents with some fascinating traditional Chinese music.
FOOD (Main Stage Performance Area)
How can we not talk about Food in Chinatown? Various vendors will bring their best dishes to the patrons. A variety of cuisine can be found. You are ensured to be treated by wonderful food while enjoying the day-long multicultural performances at the TD Stage.
PERFORMANCE (TD Main Stage)
A whole day lineup of performances at the Main Stage where hundreds of seats available for the general public. It starts from 10am all the way to 8pm, in which the official Opening Ceremony takes stage at 11:30am. Do not miss this grand opening celebration.
Bamboo Bridge Artists Association will have Chinese calligraphy lesson at the National League building atrium on 2nd Avenue. Its students also provide an open engagement for all general public to learn about this form of art at Dragon City Mall. Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office will once again showcase the latest information of the Hong Kong brand – Asia’s World City.
